Undergraduate Academic Standing

Academic Warning

An undergraduate student whose cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 will be placed on warning, indicating academic difficulty. This designation will be notated on the transcript.

Academic Probation

An undergraduate student on warning whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 will be placed on probation, indicating serious academic difficulty. The College/School of the student on probation may indicate the conditions which must be met in order to continue enrollment.  A student who maintains a term/semester GPA of 2.0 while on probation will remain on probation if the cumulative GPA is below 2.0 but will not be dismissed from the university. This designation will be notated on the transcript.

Academic Dismissal

An undergraduate student on probation whose cumulative and semester GPAs fall below a 2.0 will be automatically dismissed from his/her program and the University. This designation will be notated on the transcript. An undergraduate student will not be dismissed prior to attempting a minimum of 20 semester hours of coursework. The dismissal from the University is for a minimum of one year. After one year, the student may apply for re-admission (see Re-admission) to the University in the same or different program, or register as a non-degree seeking student.

A student who has been dismissed from the University will have ten working days to submit an appeal for Academic Reinstatement. The appeal for Academic Reinstatement is the formal method through which a student may appeal the dismissal decision. Please refer to the Academic Dismissal website for information and instructions on submitting an appeal.

If approved, the Academic Reinstatement specifies the term for which the student has been reinstated and (if applicable) limitations on the number of credit hours in which a student can enroll; please note that the student must enroll during the term specified in the reinstatement decision. The reinstatement after academic dismissal will be notated on the transcript. Dismissed students reinstated to the university are placed on academic probation. Please refer to FIU Policy 340.045 Undergraduate Appeal of Academic Dismissal for further information.
