Program Title

Certificate in Intellectual Property

The Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property is an opportunity for students to extend their knowledge of -- and preparedness to practice in - the creative economy, an area that is ever more important to national economies, global civil society, and local and global cultures.  The certificate provides opportunities for access to personal educational attention as students learn, research, and write about, and sometimes participate in, processes by which authors, inventors, brand managers, and entrepreneurs improve society and the business environment.  The program offers core courses in the laws governing U.S. and foreign copyrights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, rights of publicity (names, images, and likenesses), fashion and designs, the internet, social media, and acts amounting to "misappropriation" (of business ideas and names, timely news, or images and likenesses). Graduates of the certificate program are active in commercial litigation, government agencies, and the private sector.  Faculty in the program have an extensive record of publication and public engagement relating to copyright, trademark, and patent law, as well as related areas of law like software contracts, artificial intelligence law, and the laws governing uses of personal names, images, and likenesses.  The program is available to full-time and part-time JD students.
