This course analyzes the historical and contemporary political dynamics of the five countries of Central America. Special attention is given to problems of development and modernization within the context of the region's economic dependence on the United States. Special attention is given to the problem of political restraints on the modernization process and to those regional arrangements which have been created to solve the area's problems. The student will develop a better understanding of a region which has close ties to the United States.
