Academic Progression Requirements

Students admitted to the university are admitted directly to their chosen major. Students are expected to make satisfactory progress based on critical indicators, such as GPA in specific courses or credits earned. In cases where students are not making satisfactory progress, a change of major may be required. Advisors work to redirect students to more appropriate majors when critical indicators are not met.

Additional Degree Requirements  

Students must choose from the following majors:

--French and Francophone Studies Major

--Portuguese and Lusophone Studies Major

--Dual Language Major

 Lower Division Prerequisites

Must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of intermediate level for French and Francophone Studies Major or Portuguese and Lusophone Studies Major  or must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of intermediate level for the first language in the case of the Dual Language major.

Must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of beginning level (first two-semester sequence) of the second language in the Dual Language major.

Completion requirement

Minimum of 48 upper division credits

Major requirements: 30 credit hours

·       9 hours Common Core Courses

·       21 hours Major Required Courses

·       A minimum of 24 out of the 30 credit hours of Major Requirements must be taken in the target language(s)

·       Internship: an internship option is available to interested students.  Students enroll in a formal class for zero to three credits.  With advisor approval, internship credits may count as an elective in the major.  course Internship in Foreign Language (0-3)

Fulfill ALL of the following requirements:
Complete ALL of the following Courses:

Language- Area Focused Culture Course: 3 Credits

Language-Area Focused Language Structure Course: 3 Credits

AND
Each Major will require 21 Additional Credits

Completion requirement

Must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of intermediate level of French.

*Native and near-native French speakers will not be allowed to take FRE 3410 nor FRE 3413.

 Course relevant to the field of French and Francophone Studies, offered outside the Department, with permission of the Director of French and Francophone Studies

A minimum of 6 credit hours in the target language must be at the 4000 level.

Completion requirement

Must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of intermediate level of Portuguese.

Fulfill ALL of the following requirements:
Complete ALL of the following Courses:
AND
Complete at least 3 of the following Courses:
AND
Any POW, PRT, or POR course at the 3000 or 4000 level

Course relevant to the field of Lusophone studies, offered outside the Department, with permission of the Director of the Portuguese program.

(A minimum of 6 credit hours in the target language must be at the 4000 level)

Completion requirement

Must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of beginning level (first two-semester sequence) of the second language in the Dual Language major.

Fulfill ALL of the following requirements:
Up to 6 credits of the second language at the intermediate level may apply to the 21 credits of major core courses.

Specific course offerings in this section will depend on the language(s) selected, but these courses (with the exception noted above) should be selected from the advanced elective offerings (3000-4000 level courses) associated with either language of specialization. Students must consult with the undergraduate coordinator to develop the best course of study.

AND
A minimum of 21 credits at the upper-division (3000-4000 level) is required in the two language areas combined.  This includes a minimum of 12 credits in the first language area, and a minimum of 6 credits in the second language area. The two common core courses, Language-Area-Focused Culture and Language Structure Courses, count toward that requirement.

There are no tracks, specializations, concentrations, areas of emphasis, or other curricular offerings associated with this program.
