PHD - Doctor of Philosophy

Program Title

Global and Sociocultural Studies

The PhD in Global and Sociocultural Studies offers a unique opportunity to integrate the disciplinary approaches of anthropology, geography, and sociology with cross-disciplinary theorizing and research. The program features three overlapping themes: Identities and Inequalities, Migration and Diasporas, and Nature-Society. Utilizing comparative, transnational, diasporic, and global perspectives, students pursue research utilizing a variety of theoretical approaches and employing qualitative, quantitative, and applied research methods. The program resonates with FIU’s location in the greater metropolitan area of Miami—a dynamic, hemispheric crossroads of sociocultural, political, economic and environmental forces, bridging the United States with the Caribbean and Latin America, the Atlantic region, and the world at large. Students earning this degree will be well prepared for pursuing careers in higher education, policy-oriented organizations in the public and private sectors (especially those emphasizing health and environmental concerns), government agencies, and international organizations.
