Students in all majors (Higher Education Administration and International Higher Education) complete the following courses:
Higher Education Administration Major
The higher education administration major is designed for current and future scholar-practitioners seeking administrative and leadership roles in college and university contexts. The major prepares students to better understand contemporary issues in higher education by exploring historical and philosophical origins, applying theory to practice, and reflecting on the ethical considerations of policies and practices. Additionally, the major emphasizes developing higher education programs and initiatives that are inclusive, accessible, and respectful of the various identities, cultures, languages, and perspectives of campus stakeholders (e.g. students, staff, faculty). Special attention is given to the contributions of Minority-Serving Institutions in the United States.
There are no tracks, specializations, concentrations, areas of emphasis, or other curricular offerings associated with this program.
(1) A baccalaureate degree and an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 credit hours of upper-division undergraduate study;
(2) Work experience in higher education such as community college or student affairs areas is preferred but not required;
(3) Two (2) letters of recommendation;
(4) Personal statement;
(5) Resume.
(6) Letters and any other supporting documents are to be sent to the FIU Graduate Admissions Office.
(7) Applicants must choose one of the following majors: Higher Education Administration or International Higher Education.
Note: The GRE is not a requirement for admission into the M.S. in Higher Education Administration program.
In addition to the 15 hours of core courses (listed above), students take three (3) required courses and four (4) elective courses.

International Higher Education Major
The international higher education major is designed for current and future scholar-practitioners seeking internationalization roles on college and university campuses, in departments such as international student and scholar services, education abroad, global learning initiatives, international student admissions, and pathway programs for international students. In addition, students in the International Higher Education major will gain the knowledge and skills to work as scholars, researchers, and practitioners in governmental, non-governmental, and private industries that focus on student and faculty success in higher education settings throughout the world.
In addition to the 15 hours of core courses (listed above), students take three (3) required courses and four elective courses.
Students must choose four (4) elective courses from the list below or from other areas with advisor approval.
