Major in Computer Science and Biology

This is an alternative to the primary major with coursework focused on interdisciplinary of computer science and biology. Students will be provided with foundational background in both disciplines, followed by an integrated curriculum that explicitly pursues problems involving interdependencies between disciplines, communication across disciplines, and modern interdisciplinary topics and trends.

Students may take any 3-credit 3000/4000 level Biology course with prefix BCH, BOT, BSC, ENY, MCB, OCB, PCB, ZOO. Below is a list of recommended courses

Students must take at least two additional BIO labs beyond those listed in lower and upper division requirements. Accompanying labs in elective courses can be used to satisfy this requirement.

Major in Computer Science and Psychology

Second Major in Medical Sciences

This track lets students in sciences or humanities build medical knowledge and skills, preparing for med school or another health-related career. Students complete pre-medical requirements as part of a second major, complementing the first major of their choice.

Students who plan to apply for a graduate health program will need to take course and course.

The primary version of the Natural & Applied Sciences major offers a flexible degree that requires students to take 30 hours of upper-division coursework within CASE and other FIU colleges or schools as appropriate. A 3-credit capstone course helps students choose a pathway to a career or postgraduate education.

Common Prerequisites

No specific courses required; all students transferring from Florida community colleges are encouraged to complete the Associate in Arts degree.

There are no track, specialization, concentration, area of emphasis, or other curricular offerings associated with this program.

Completion requirement

Students must take 21 credits of 3000- or 4000-level courses distributed in the areas below (in special cases, exceptions may be made for the more challenging lower division science courses).

With assistance from the Natural and Applied Sciences CASE advisors, students build a concentration relevant to their future career or post-BA educational goals. Some courses may require prerequisites and labs.

Students will take 21 hours of upper-level STEM courses, across these following areas:

Choose courses from any of the following: Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Geology, Systemic Geography, Meteorology, General and Chemical Oceanography, Physics, Physical Sciences courses.

In addition, course may also be taken to fulfill this requirement.

Earn at least 6 credits
AND

Choose courses from any of the following: Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, Process Biology, Biological Oceanography, Environmental Science, Entomology, Health Information Management, Health Sciences (course) and (course), Human Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Public Health, Science Education, Zoology courses.

In addition, course and course may also be taken to fulfill this requirement.

Earn at least 6 credits
AND

Choose courses from any of the following: Building Construction, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Applications, Civil Construction Engineering, Computer Design Architecture, Computer Engineering, Computer General Studies, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Networks, Computer Theory, Computer Programming, Computer Technology and Skills, Civil Water Resources, Engineering Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Support, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geography Information Science, Interdisciplinary Computing, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Applied Mathematics, Algebraic Structures, Statistics courses.

In addition, course and course may also be taken to fulfill this requirement.

An additional course, in consultation with a program advisor, to build upon subject-matter expertise in any of the areas listed above.

*course to be taken at least three semesters before the intended last semester before graduation. This course positions students for success in a self-designed, interdisciplinary, non-career-aligned major as they pursue an individualized and focused program of study.

*course to be taken at least one semester before the semester of anticipated graduation to solidify degree focus and prepare for post-baccalaureate career or advanced degrees. A comparable course may be used as a substitute.

Other research, internship or a professional development credit-earning opportunity may be used as a substitute for course.
